“Ted Lueras sat in a large study chair upholstered in fabric that approximated something valuable and watched as Dr. Professor George Kellogg sorted papers around a perspiring can of Diet Pepsi near his desk lamp. His dream was this: avoid being fired, somehow swing a promotion or change in job title, become the indirect cause of the divorce, marry this man’s wife in less than a year.

‘Ted,’ the doctor announced. ‘Ted, I think we need to talk about true love here.’

Uncomfortable, Ted at last decided that he would take that soda offered only moments ago.

‘Sure.’”

Now it’s shrunk down to almost nothing, you see.

And, uh, I still remember in my mind how things used to be, and, uh, you know, I feel very bad. But people from all over the world came here … from all over the world. It was the playground. They called it the playground of the world, over here.

Anyways, you see, I, uh, you know, I even got, when I was very small, I even got lost at Coney Island, but they found me … on the … on the beach. And we used to sleep on the beach here, sleep overnight. They don’t do it anymore. Things changed, you see. They don’t sleep anymore on the beach.”

Alcohol Paraphernalia: A Reflection on Perceptions & Policy Rationale

My mandatory “reflection paper” addressed to the Dean in regards to a bogus student conduct violation…

Reflection Paper

Alcohol Paraphernalia: A Reflection on Perceptions & Policy Rationale

Allow me to begin by announcing that being fined $25 and being required to write a reflection paper on the horrors of the dreaded “trophy wall” and the inevitable “perceptions” that come along with this unspeakable abomination has, frankly, been an eye-opening experience in my life. Not only do I now realize the truly devastating consequences elicited by the actions of the residents of my suite, but it has also come to my attention that my prior notions about alcohol have, in fact, been misconceptions. Stowed away deep in my dark, ugly past are my ill-informed philosophies of yesteryear. Gone are the reckless mentalities so impulsively impressed upon me by the counter-culture scum that comprise the current age of teenage youth.

Picture this: an impressionable juvenile delinquent, haphazardly deteriorating in a downward spiral within a disgraceful social construct. I assure you, I above all, am well-aware that this is a disturbing mental image; you see, just a mere 6 weeks ago, this was me. In the precious time elapsed since then, the new man inside me has awakened. In this heightened state of awareness, I have made a significant discovery: alcohol is worse than heroin. [1] Due in no small part to this disciplinary assignment, I feel that I have stopped myself short right at the edge of the proverbial cliff of disaster. By some illuminating act of God, I have been spared of the evil that awaits all those who fall prey to the beckoning grasp of alcohol. The bottles that once sat upon the alluring windowsill of our third-floor common room, their labels painstakingly pointed inward, their appearance capable of being mistaken for cane cola, probing us residents to recycle them for 5¢ apiece… They represent much more to me now. These dark objects are mere echoes of a destructive past. It is a service to us all, the residents and the potential onlookers, and dare I mention the kids – that such filth has been removed from the premises. Quite honestly, even the idea of a faithful heroin abuser parading around the classy streets of West Haven as a role model for our children is a comforting thought, when contrasted with the painfully evocative suggestion of what would become of a child afflicted with the misfortune of exhibition of our shameful trophy wall. There are simply some things in this world that one cannot un-see. The very thought sends a powerful shiver down my spine.

I was once that child. Having then fallen victim myself to the morbid sight of responsible adults having legally enjoyed alcoholic beverages, I can empathize with the younger generation we so carelessly put at risk with our appalling display. The recent epiphany I’ve had in my deep period of reflection has unearthed another dreadful truth: if you drink alcoholic beverages, you will die of alcohol poisoning. [2] To lead the innocent youth of today in the self-destructive path paved by the likes of Amy Winehouse and co. is to illuminate the road to a dark fate in which I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy. Furthermore, it was more than reasonable to demand we move our “Bar’s Open” sign from the window, as, despite there not even being a passive mention of any rule that could be even vaguely interpreted as pertaining to such an object in the official student handbook, it undoubtedly acts as a gateway to the vile route we so desperately want to avoid. To even think that we had the audacity to assume such a sign could be harmless, quite truthfully boggles the mind. In any case, I have since come to my senses and can hardly conceive how I, at one point, failed to see the gaping holes in my deeply flawed logic.

There is an oft-mentioned school of thought that goes something like this: “A life condemned to prison is a fate worse than death.” Allow me to take this opportunity to liken this ghastly declaration to the grim situation I find myself in today. Not only must I live with the agony spawned by the consequences of my misdeeds for the rest of my life, but I must do so in a metaphorical prison, trapped in the despair of my wayward past. At this point I can ask only of your forgiveness. Alcohol is but an abusive tool that leads to a path of self-destruction and unspeakable tragedy. I see now that our atrocious demonstration served only to perpetuate the evil of alcohol, and to hoodwink children into choosing this direction. Well, there is only one healthy direction for a responsible, legal adult in the 21st century, and it is alcohol abstinence. What can I say? Lesson learned.
